    Mono Township By-law attached...

Clearly Dufferin County and Mono Township particularly are not in favour of organized motorcycling activities as witnessed by this activity and the suggested closure of their forests to riding (except on horses).

The date of the 2014 Terra Nova Enduro is no longer "Tentative". The firm date is Sunday, October 19. This enduro remains a blue plated and insured event. More detail to follow.

Shawn, that bike should have a huge home field advantage at the TN, provided that it isn't hampered by the operator.

Let's say a total newb to all this wanted to come out and race, what would I need to do? Also is there any cc restriction or just blue plated cc doesn't matter?

Just blue plate, license insurance. You'll need an Offroad Ontario membership (cheaper if bought in advance), then pay for the race. Simple.

Be sure to bring water, snacks and gas. Check out http://offroadontario.ca/blog/ for more details.

Hope to see you out there.

Norm, Thanks for pre-registering. Good luck; hope you enjoy the ride.
Conditions are great right now, and look good for next weekend, with only some minor concern with the amount of moisture that we might receive during the week.
If there is still enough demand to have this type of enduro, we will try hard to bring it up to 21st century standards for next year.
The route utilizes only seven tracts of Simcoe County forest and connecting roads. Road mileage is vastly reduced compared to previous years. No horrendous rocky uphills, no swamps and no extreme tests. He have the use of three forest tracts that are normally non-motorized, but are made available to us for only this event. Please don't ride in these tracts prior to, or after the event. It is obvious as we prepare for the enduro, that motorized users, both two and four wheeled have been riding the non-motorized sections. This is very discouraging when there is legal riding close by. If you want all the forests shut down, I can't think of a better way to accomplish that goal.

This event is not a serious test for Pro level riders, but will still be somewhat challenging. For average competitive riders, the ride will provide sufficient challenge. For experienced trail riders who are curious about trying an old fashioned enduro before they are gone, this might be one of only a few chances left. We are offering a non-competitive, non-trophy Trail Rider class as has been asked for in recent years. If you are a competent rider, with an insured, blue plated bike, you would be missing a treat if you miss this ride.

Great event, one of the most enjoyable of the year. Being hosted at a golf course was unique and it required all my strength to not visit each green, fairway and sand trap with my FE450 and a fresh knobbie. Hopefully we can get the location again next year, it was a real treat.

The course conditions were surprisingly very good. A few mucky sections to keep you honest, but they were short and the flowing pine forest sections easily made up for it. A big thanks to all the volunteers and organizers, the Terra Nova this year was a fantastic way to cap off the season.

Yes was a great one, thanks to everyone who put it on. It was my first one and I learned a ton, like the 640 and single track don't mix, and if you really want to beat yourself up go with a cold and bald knobbies haha. Was great though!

Kevin and Bryan, thanks for your much appreciated comments. Your sentiments, as well as those expressed at the event, and again today, are the reason that the Terra Nova still exists. Norm, you are something special and to be commended. We quite often get a rider at the TN who is testing the water with a bike that is almost too much for the task. You were him this year. Thanks to those who came out to ride yesterday, and the volunteers who made it possible. Special thanks to those who made the trek from outside the province and the country, including our overall winner, Alan Randt. Best wishes for a fast and complete recovery to those injured, especially Tim Hart, who I hear really messed up his knee.

As a club, HORRA is conflicted about what to do with the Terra Nova. On the face of it, it doesn't seem to make much sense to continue to put on an event that attracts so few riders, far fewer than the number of volunteers who helped make the event what it was.
We could use some input as to how to move forward to an event that can draw at least 80 riders. This is not a financial target, as we don't have to even make expenses for the event, but after putting as much effort as we do into it, we would like to see more smiling riders.

Considerations have included changing the event totally, to being an OFTR Trail Ride, but trail ride attendance was also down this year. For 2014, we offered a Trail Ride class, but admittedly didn't advertise the fact very well. Still it was disappointing that not one Trail Rider registered.
We except that the TN entry is negatively effected by the blue plate requirement, and by the weather. Still 80 riders should be attainable. Because of the need for a blue plated bike, the Terra Nova doesn't fit well with the rest of the OO Enduro Series. We need to have a compelling reason to carry on. To those who left your blue plated bikes in the garage yesterday, or went for an informal trail ride, how could we get your participation? Was our Labour Day weekend date, as in 2013, a better idea? An early date might mean that the golf course couldn't host us. Is that important? Is it important that we get back into Mulmur township, or did you even know that the event was shorter for 2014?

Hearing from those who have traditionally ridden the event, whatever the date, would be appreciated, but hearing from those who haven't ridden it lately, or ever, would be a great help.

Heard great things about the event yesterday. I also really liked the Labour day date used last year.

Hey Rick. That was a terrific event yesterday, great people and vibe throughout. It's a mystery to me why there weren't more riders out. #-o Get off the couch people!
This was the 3rd year in a row that I've attended and the first time I actually finished. Perseverance and all that
Personally, I like the later date. Late fall enduros add to the challenge. It also doesn't compete with the Boogie and Cord for time and resources. This may be sacrilegious to say, but I liked the length as well. The venue was a great spot.
I did find it interesting that there were at least 6 people that I know of, who were attending their 1st enduro. What bought them out?

    Hi Rick:

First, thanks to HORRA and everyone that helped to put this event on.

The three km of trail I saw were really nice. Unfortunately a cam sprocket bolt backed out, jammed/broke my timing chain. Ending my day. Thanks to the sweeps and Jill Carney for getting me back to the start.
As for the event, I think the forecast and cold weather keeps lots away. I liked last years date but I also understand that it conflicts with many peoples family plans. Maybe if it was run in its current (shorter) format in August you would attract more riders as it would be the first enduro leading in to the fall enduro season. Ive only been riding this event for five years, I've enjoyed every one. It took me three tries to finish it, It has wore me out, broke my ribs and broke my bike. I love this event, it would be sad to see it go.

Sorry I did not attend this year. I have not missed many since the 80's. But I told some buddies in NY State I would work their GP Hare Scramble at Pavillion NY on the same day.

Blue plating is the real issue IMHO.

All the "traditional" Enduros suffer because younger riders can't get a dealer to Blue Plate a bike (can't say I blame the Dealers) and even if they could the Insurance to be sure is more than many 20 somethings can afford.

The loss of the Primrose section, now the loss of riding the sections on Lance's and Nil's property means your stuck in SCF. Which is OK , but certainly not the event the Terra Nova used to be.

My contacts in NY State used to ask about this Ontario event or that Ontario event. I used to tell them to ride the Beagle Bash (because its 1st and well organized on great trails you can't use other times of the year), The Cord, (because its iconic), and the Tera Nova (because it has everything, rivers, rock, clay, sand, tight woods, meadows, awesome organization and great views).

I don't have a good answer to low rider turnouts. Maybe its a money and travel thing, maybe its because its more work and effort for little reward. Even the Hare Scramble series seems stalled at 150 riders. That could be because we have 2 Sanction bodies in the Province splitting the riders up. I have not seen much growth in MX either other than new sanction bodies popping up here and there and way too many classes. (was at a MX in NY State 2 weeks ago, they sent out some classes with 5 riders in them, crazy)

I do know I went to the Monkey Butt 100 Trail Ride this fall in Newark NY. Entry was over 200 riders. This used to be the old Wayne County Enduro, but the Club noticed lack of racers back in the early 90's. So the changed to a Trail Ride format and their entry grew. That and they have the support of the towns and the police in those towns. Lots of MX bikes with flashlights taped to the number plates at this one. They basically told you at riders meeting, "don't give the police any reason to pull you over" .

We had the same problem with the Sunstoke Enduro down here in Niagara. When we realized we had more workers (85 or 90 ) and only 65 riders, we put an end to our event.

I wish you luck with whatever decision HORRA comes to. This is not going to be easy.

Thank you HORRA and all the volunteers for a fantastic race on Sunday! It was the most fun I had racing all season. I always enjoy the TN but this year was especially fun. The SC trails we rode were excellent. Lots of pine forest and sandy soil that must have soaked up all that rain. Couldn't have asked for better terrain. From a fun racing experience perspective there is no reason this event shouldn't have great attendance.

    The obvious hurdles are:
    - blue plate requirement - i don't see an easy alternative here except possibly changing the location or a lot more trail duplication (loops in one or two large forests) - are there any other enduro race formats that could be considered?
    - encouraging members of the Dual Sport or Trail Ride community to try racing (they'll be hooked once they do)
    - date/timing - I too enjoy late season enduros but I suspect many people have already started focusing on other things at this time of year. One possibility would be to see this enduro scheduled somewhere mid-summer, during the XC season, when everyone is around (home/off from school etc.). For the folks who only ride enduros they have a long break in the summer. IMO labour day weekend isn't ideal as it's a busy vacation weekend and/or getting ready to go back to school time.

    I hope the TN survives!!!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy
