Nothing new, first one went into production in 1911. This engine configuration was also used in WWII torpedoes where it fits nicely in the torpedo shell.
what's wrong with it ?
Cost and complexity me thinks. The sealing between the cylinders and the head might be an issue as well. I can also imagine some emissions problems.
BTW, this is how many hydraulic pumps work. The Hondamatic CVT works this way.
