    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

Is the old board running / returning this year? Should it be expanded to 7 considering the members were informed they were overwhelmed with too much work to run and ODSC events?

    Just asking

I will not be standing for the board this year, so that leaves at least one position open.

While my past two years on the board have been informative and enjoyable I think it's important to have continual renewal and provide opportunity for other ODSC members to participate and contribute their ideas at the board level.

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

There is a consensus among the exec that a motion could be tabled at the AGM changing the bylaws from a board size of 5 to a board of 5-7 members, which may not be a bad idea.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to with the 2nd part of your question though............please clarify..

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

Last year several of the EXEC expressed the large amount of work they had to contend with . < OFTR , Race > My question or suggestion if you will , was that perhaps a larger board would perhaps relieve some of the workload per exec. I totally understand that by the time the year end event should have been worked on that people were burnt out, it was a tough year. A small group ran our own year end ride but something bigger would have been nice. Even a few more events would be nice.

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

Normally, the ODSC has run with a relatively lighter workload for the execs since we dropped the Mazinaw/Weslemkoon rides.

2012 was an anomaly as far as workload for the ODSC execs went. Granted much of it wasn't necessarily directly ODSC related. Ron and Steve had Motomotion, which I helped with as well.
Then, the OFTR situation came to a head and sucked the life out of everyone involved. Keep in mind that workload wasn't related to the ODSC itself and how it operates. The ODSC was drawn in to the OFTR situation more than it would have otherwise because of -------------- well, we all know the story there......

Motomotion won't be back for 2013, so Steve and Ron can have a bit of a rest. The OFTR issue we dealt with is pretty much cleared up & I can confidently say that the OFTR is moving forward in exciting and positive ways.

I doubt the 2013 board will have a very significant workload. Our only project so far is to finish the site upgrade.

As far as rides and events go, I still plan to do the ODSC training day this spring. Events such as Bethany etc. should still happen but should really be member driven (with exec support) IMO.
Where we also can do well is the smaller events and casual get togethers like the Creemore rides, or ?????????? Those are great because they don't typically require much in the way of setup/volunteer time, are fun for those who participate, and are a great way to introduce new members to our club & (possibly) the OFTR clubs.
Given that most of our paying members are also members of local clubs as well, and that they're likely involved at that level, it's harder for them to spare the time to add more working events to their workload, so my experience has been that it's harder to get enough volunteers to stage big organized ODSC events in that regard.
Our main asset is the website for communication etc., a place for new people to get and share info, and enter into the D/S & offroad sports. We're not a land stewardship club like SCORRA or GPTR, nor a competition/working club like HORRA or OCMC.

The way I see it, let the local clubs put on the big organized events & we can focus on our website and the smaller & more casual events. Others may have different or better viewpoints & that's a good thing. Hopefully, with some new faces on our board, things can be taken a step or two forward.

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

I hope this year is much calmer for the Club. As you mentioned , a lot of the EXEC had other things going on , helping with several other bike organizations. I'm glad the OFTR has things sorted out now. If i did trail riding i would not hesitate to join.

A lot of the guys that show up for the creemore rides every week are not ODSC / OFTR members. I'm not sure that will change but i thought organized rides might help that. A few i spoke with would join the ODSC but not the extra for the OFTR. This year i fall into that group as well. If i can Join tthe ODSC on its own , just tell me where to send the money.

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

    Randy -

We can have as many organized rides as you want-

    Some key considerations:
    - They need to be organized by members, so they and the participants etc. can be covered under our club liability policy.
    - When would you have them, considering the calendar is pretty much full from the end of April til mid Oct......?

I get that there are some folks that don't want to pay the extra $55/yr for OFTR. (I don't necessarily understand why though.......maybe the OFTR needs to do a better job of communicating????) However, they are also giving up any chance of having a voice by making that choice. The OFTR is all we've got and will be making significant progress in several key areas over the next couple years. If people support it, all the better. If they don't...........?

Here's some questions- what is the price that folks will pay to join the ODSC without OFTR? ($10 isn't enough, as that doesn't do anything for the club, as we break even at $10 for memberships.)
Who will manage those extra memberships? (the OFTR does it for us currently)

    Re: AGM Mar. 9 2013

3 capable and intelligent members have thrown their hat into the ring for exec positions =D> :

    Michel Mondou-
48 years old, father of 4. I live in Cambridge. I am originally from Longueuil, Québec.

Have been riding for 9 years, ODSC member since 2005. Also OFTR and KWCSA member/supporter/believer. I ride a 2001 KLR-650 and a 2006 GasGas 300EC. I am also member of the "Cambridge Crew". I like riding both Dual Sport and trails.

Professionally, I have been an airline pilot for 18 years; before that, I was a military pilot/officer for 12 years.

I would like to submit my candidacy to the ODSC executive board to help guide the club to remain relevant, interesting and exciting to dual sport and off road riders; newcomers and experienced alike.

    Arthur Ash
I am a somewhat “newer” member of ODSC having only joined in the last three years. I am like many others in the ODSC and was away from the sport for a long time due to things like starting a family and a career. I have a son who now rides with me and volunteers at events with me at times. We enjoy the community and the fun of going to events and also participating in them. We are members in good standing of SCORRA, ODSC, and OFTR. I am a volunteer with OFTR and SCORRA working at trail rides, races and the bike shows in Toronto. I currently work for the County of Wellington and have gained a great deal of knowledge on how to deal with government agencies from this career. Prior to this I was a Mechanical Engineer for 17 years and have worked all over North America in the auto industry. I am an outdoors person who enjoys motorcycles both off and on road, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hunting and hiking.

I support the direction and goals of the ODSC particularly in its capacity as the leading on line forum for Ontario Dual Sport and Off Road riders. I believe from personal experience that this club and the forum that it operates can actually change one’s life in many ways. From being a place to find a bike for sale in a “safer” environment than simply any old ad on Kijiji or Craigslist to being a wealth of information for the new rider or rider returning from a long hiatus. I have made some great friends through ODSC and would love to see more chances for members to meet up. As a group the voice of ODSC has a serious impact within the community and with other groups such as OFTR and the various riding clubs in Ontario. I enjoy riding a great deal and realize that without volunteers to run the various organizations we will not have places to ride or events to compete in. I am hoping that with the membership’s support I will be able to contribute some of my skills to the club and events that it is involved in.

    John Harvey
59 yrs old, live in Peterborough, self-employed accountant working with my wife Heather in an accounting practice. Have enjoyed the ODSC website since the late nineties and a member on and off since then (board name:Ontario GS). I had various discussions with Brian over the past year’s challenges and he suggested I stand for the ODSC Board which, I’m happy to do. I have volunteered to assist the OFTR Board this year on the finance committee.

Bought my first motorcycle at 12 and have owned bikes on and off ever since. I consider myself a true “dual-sport” rider, enjoying the adventure travel style of riding. Presently own 3 bikes, a BMW 1150GS (for sale), a KTM 690 Enduro and a Husky TE250. I’m converting the 690 into more of my adventure bike and have organized a group of like minded riders to complete the Heart of the West tour this summer, a 4,700 km ride through Idaho , Utah , Nevada Montana, Wyoming and Colorado .

Everyone, come out to the AGM on Sat. and help set us up for 2013 :D .

    Also-

Could really use a couple volunteers to handle voter registration and vote counts.

Let me know if you're interested.

Would it be possible to post a link in this thread to direct folks( including me!) to the oftr registration Page. Might help facilitate signups.
